"Screensaver" is out of the question, because nobody wants to have to disable screensaver every time they watch something. Menu auto-off is possible and might be implemented in future. Still, it will not be 100% safe, as you will still get screen burns if you leave and forget while viewing...

Always download from the project homepage or sourceforge page and follow the installation and debugging instructions given on the homepage.
About the hfs+ issue, you might want to try removing "hfs" from /GEEXBOX/etc/filesystems.

Blue light flickering is the sign of linux booting.
What you describe is probably just another manifestation of the known network initialization bug in HBC, or something very similar.
